The same sound may seem faint to one child and very loud to another. A child may also experience the same thing differently on different days or in different settings.

Everyday examples

The sound of a hair dryer, a bright light, a clothing label, a crowded room, or a strong smell may bother some children. Some children may prefer to move or seek out particular sounds. These are possibilities; a behavior on its own does not explain what a child is feeling or why they are behaving that way.

Try to understand your child's experience

When something happens, first consider what was going on around them: Was the setting crowded? Did the light or sound change? Did your child try to move closer, or want to move away? Does the same response happen at other times?

If your child can describe their experience in words, signs, pictures, or another way, listen to them. If you are unsure, ask using a form of communication they understand rather than making assumptions. Do not draw a definite conclusion from a single response.

How can you support your child?

Giving advance notice, allowing your child to move to a place where they feel comfortable, or offering a short break may help in some situations. First, consider what your child wants and what is safe. There is no one solution that works for every child; do not force them to continue an activity that is upsetting them.

When should you consult a professional?

If sensory experiences cause distress in your child's daily life, affect their safety, or create a need for support for your family, talk with a health or education professional who knows your child. This article does not provide an assessment or treatment. The NHS advises against trying to change a child's behavior unless it is harmful.

Sources

National Autistic Society — Sensory processing

NHS — Supporting an autistic child

Author: Ufuk Çelik, researcher · Last updated: October 5, 2026.
